Log anywhere, even with no signal

By Harry Winteringham, documentary PD and founder of Earwig

Some of the best days I have filmed had no signal at all. A farm at the end of a valley. A basement. A hospital corridor. A hotel abroad where the data never quite works. On every one of those days, Earwig needed the internet to do its job.

Not any more.

Record with nothing but the phone

Open Earwig, press record, and log the way you always do. The words come up on screen as they are said, and every mark you tap is saved on the phone. No signal needed. When you get back to the world, the shoot is sitting there waiting for you.

Your marks still land in the right place

Before you roll, point your phone at the timecode on your camera, the clock running on its screen, and Earwig matches itself to it. No camera timecode? It uses the time of day instead. Either way every mark is stamped to the frame, so the moment you caught at 10:14 opens at 10:14 in your edit.

Nothing leaves the phone

This is the part I care most about. Turn on Private mode in Settings and everything stays on this phone: the words, the marks, the audio. Nothing is sent anywhere. Nothing is uploaded until you tap Upload yourself. So the interview someone is only giving you because it stays between the two of you never leaves your hand.

Keep the mic close and the room reasonably quiet, and the transcript reads back clean.

Send your notes from the phone

At the end, tap Share my notes. It goes wherever you want it: WhatsApp, Messages, email. Times and the lines people actually said, as text, ready to paste into a production email before you have got the cards out of the camera.

Send to my edit gives you the files for Resolve or Premiere. And when you have signal again, Upload puts the whole shoot into your account.

You never have to write those notes up again.

Private mode lives in Settings. The shoots themselves are under My Earwigs, On this iPhone.
